Remains of 10th century hose from Hedeby. Click for larger view. This is the top part of a single hose with remains of tape attached which dates to the late 10th century, found in Hedeby. All that survives is around 8 inches at the top with a defined taper to it, a turned but ragged hem at the top edge where the tape attaches at the gentle apex on the front side. Made of wool, there is a seam at the back and another piece joining it at the lower surviving section. It's definitely a tube that is too large to be a tied on sleeve of some sort. The Anglo/Saxon lexicography covers the subject of braies but not specifically hose.

This is the scene which Kim Siddorn (and the author of the book the Year 1000) suggest may be a criminal being led to a trial by fire. Roland (and others) suggest they may just be burning 'staves'. The drawing is by Roland Williamson after the original.
